When should you move up from a 125, and to what?

The question everyone asks in year two

At some point every 125 rider starts wondering whether they have outgrown it. Sometimes that instinct is right. Sometimes it is impatience, and the honest answer is that more skill on the current bike is worth more than more power on a new one.

Signs you have genuinely outgrown it

  • The roads you want to ride are ones the bike struggles on, not ones you struggle on
  • You regularly carry a pillion or luggage and the bike is clearly working
  • You are comfortable and unhurried in traffic and want to travel further
  • Your licence category has changed and you have taken further training

Signs you have not

  • You want a bigger bike because of how it looks
  • You are still uncomfortable at low speed or in heavy traffic
  • You have not yet done a full season in varied conditions
  • Your reasoning is mainly what other riders are riding

There is no shame in either answer. Plenty of experienced riders keep a small bike permanently because it suits the riding they do.

Where people go next

Within the range, the usual progressions are 125 to 250, or a jump to the A2-compliant machines — the 494cc twins are A2 compliant as standard, which makes them a common destination for riders moving up without wanting a restricted bike.

Tell us your path

If you moved up: what from, what to, how long you waited, and — honestly — whether you moved too early or left it too late. Both answers help someone reading this.

If you deliberately stayed: your post is just as useful, and there are fewer of them.
