More bikes are damaged by washing than by dirt
Washing is maintenance, particularly in winter where roads are salted. But done carelessly it forces water into places it should not be, and the consequences show up months later as corroded connectors and failed bearings.
Pressure washers
Convenient and the most common cause of self-inflicted damage. If you use one:
- Never at close range, and never directly at wheel bearings, steering head, suspension seals, the chain, electrical connectors, switchgear, instruments or the exhaust outlet
- Wide fan setting, well back, and moving
- Never at the chain. It forces water past the seals and washes out the lubricant inside — a chain can be ruined in one wash
A hose, a bucket and a soft brush do a better job with none of the risk.
Method
- Cold engine. Cold water on a hot engine or exhaust is not good for either
- Rinse first to remove grit before touching anything, otherwise you are rubbing grit into the paint
- Bike-specific cleaner or mild detergent. Aggressive household chemicals attack anodising, alloy and seals
- Separate brush for the wheels and chain area, because brake dust and chain lube ruin paintwork
- Rinse thoroughly — dried detergent marks and can be corrosive
Afterwards, which matters most
- Dry properly. A leaf blower or compressed air clears water from crevices better than any cloth
- Ride it gently to dry the brakes and evaporate trapped water — check the brakes work before you rely on them
- Re-lubricate the chain. Every wash removes lubricant. This is not optional
- Corrosion protection on exposed metal if you ride through winter
Winter and salt
If roads are salted where you live, wash more often — not for appearance, but because salt damage is cumulative and attacks fasteners, brackets and connectors long before it shows on paint.
