DS900X suspension setup — sag, preload and damping

The DS900X has adjustable preload and damping at both ends. Most owners never touch it. That's a shame, because factory settings are a compromise aimed at an average rider who is probably not you.



WHAT YOU HAVE
  • Front: KYB upside-down forks, adjustable preload and damping
  • Rear: Centrally mounted monoshock, adjustable preload and damping

STEP ONE: SET RIDER SAG

Sag is how far the bike settles under its own weight and yours. Get this wrong and no damping adjustment will save you.

You need a helper and a tape measure.

  • L1: bike fully unloaded, front wheel off the ground. Measure from the rear axle to a fixed point on the bodywork directly above it
  • L2: bike on its wheels, no rider. Same two points
  • L3: you on the bike in full riding kit, feet on the pegs, helper steadying the bike. Same two points

Rider sag = L1 − L3. For an adventure bike, aim for roughly 30–35% of total rear travel.

Too much sag → add preload. Too little → back it off.

STEP TWO: DAMPING

Change one adjuster at a time, count your clicks from fully closed, write them down, and ride the same road after each change. If you change three things at once you've learned nothing.

  • Front dives hard under braking, feels vague: add compression damping
  • Front feels harsh over sharp bumps: reduce compression damping
  • Rear kicks or pogos after a bump: add rebound damping
  • Rear feels dead and packs down over successive bumps: reduce rebound damping

STEP THREE: SETTINGS FOR SITUATIONS

  • Solo, unloaded: your baseline
  • Loaded with luggage: add rear preload. This is what preload is actually for
  • Two-up: more rear preload again, and don't forget the higher tyre pressures — 250 kPa front, 290 kPa rear
  • Gravel and trails: softer compression front and rear for compliance



Record your baseline settings before you touch anything. Count clicks from fully closed and write it in your phone. You'll want the way back.

Post your settings below with your weight, your kit weight and your typical load. A database of real-world settings from real riders is one of the genuinely useful things a forum can build.
