Chains do not fail quietly
Almost every chain problem gives warning first — noise, uneven tension, visible wear. Recognising the signs early is the difference between a routine adjustment and buying a chain, both sprockets and possibly a gearbox output bearing.
The slack figure and adjustment procedure come from your manual. What follows is diagnosis, not settings.
Symptom to cause

The tight spot test
This is the single most informative check and it takes a minute. With the bike safely supported and in neutral, turn the wheel by hand and check the slack at several points through a full rotation.
If the slack varies noticeably, the chain has worn unevenly. Two consequences follow:
- You must set slack at the tightest point, never the loosest — otherwise the chain goes bar-tight at that point every rotation
- A significant tight spot usually means the chain is finished
Never do this with the engine running. People have lost fingers.
Why over-tightening is worse than slightly loose
A chain adjusted too tight loads the gearbox output shaft bearing continuously. Suspension movement tightens it further — the chain run is at its longest partway through the travel, so a chain that feels right on the stand can be dangerously tight over a bump with a pillion aboard.
The result is a destroyed output bearing, which is an engine-out job. This is why the manual gives a range and why you should stay in it.
Alignment
If a chain wears unusually fast or a sprocket wears on one side of the teeth, suspect wheel alignment. The adjuster marks on the swingarm are a guide and are not always accurate. If you have a persistent problem, measure rather than trust the marks.
When to replace
- Tight spots that will not adjust out
- Visible kinking, or links that do not sit straight
- The chain can be lifted noticeably away from the rear sprocket at the back
- Sprocket teeth hooked or pointed instead of symmetrical
- Adjustment has reached the end of its range
Replace the chain and both sprockets together. A new chain on worn sprockets wears out fast, and the money saved disappears within months.
